JUNIOR RED CROSS CAMP

Junior Red Cross Wing of Alpha Matriculation Higher Secondary school organized the District Level Annual Camp on 11th and 12th Nov, 2011.

Under the able guidance of the Correspondent Dr. Mrs. Grace George, Principal Mrs.M. Vijaya Lakshmi and Counselor Ms.P.Bhagiyalakshmi eighty children took active part in various competitions and cultural programmes.

Mr. Sarathy, the District Convener and Secretary of Red Cross Society inaugurated the function. It was followed by a demonstration on fire extinguishing procedures by Mr. T. Purushottam, Assistant Fire Officer and his team from the Fire Rescue Department, Madras-83. There was an awareness programme on Health and Disaster Management. The function ended with valedictory ceremony and prize distribution.

ALPHA STUDENTS ON A GLOBAL VENTURE

Four students of Alpha Matriculation Higher Secondary school took part in IDEERS 2011. (Introducing, demonstrating earthquake engineering research in schools) at Taipei city, Taiwan. The competition was organized by the British Council and the National Centre of Research on Earthquake Engineering (NCREE), Taiwan.

There were 50 teams from all over Asia in the High School category and the team from Alpha was the only representation from India which is a commendable achievement under the support and encouragement of the Principal Mrs. M. Vijaya Lakshmi. This was also the first time students from India took part in this competition.
The competition was all about constructing a model of a building, according to certain rules with materials given by the organizers such that it could withstand an earthquake of a very high magnitude.

The team leader Harsha. P std. XII said that it was a wonderful experience where Knowledge, skill and precision were put to test. an experience to be cherished for a life time. The other members were Biju Yeshrun Std. XII, Megnath. R and Kishore Kumar. S of std. XI. Mr. J. Srinivasan H.O.D (Physics department) was their mentor and accompanied the team to Taipei.

The trip spanned a period of 6 days from 21st to 26th September and the competition was held on the 24th and the 25th. The Alpha team was lauded for their excellent performance with certificates and bag full of goodies.

TWINNING PROGRAMME

In connection with the Twinning programme between Alpha Matriculation Higher Secondary School, West C.I.T Nagar Chennai-35 and Pioneer Secondary School Singapore, ten students and two staff members from Pioneer secondary school Singapore made a reciprocal visit to the School from 14th to the 18th of November 2011. Last April ten Alpha students and two staff members were in Singapore at the Pioneer Secondary school.

There were class room immersions, sharing of the best teaching learning methodologies and a lot of cultural exchange. Their visit coincides with student’s active involvement in the activities for the British Council’s ‘International School Award’. The Chair person Dr. Mrs. Grace George, Principal Mrs. M. Vijaya Lakshmi, the staff and students of Alpha accorded a warm welcome and a pleasant stay for the guest at Alpha.
